The Reality of Online Shopping in Zambia: Payments, Shipping, and Trust

I think almost every Zambian with a smartphone has dreamed of ordering online. We’ve all heard about the cheap prices and the wide variety of products out there. But then, a few serious questions hit you:“How do I even get started?” and “Which platform should I use—an app or a website?”

If you’re anything like me and determined to figure it out, you’d probably go to Google and type something like “how to order clothes, phones, or laptops online.” The search results usually give step-by-step guides for platforms like Alibaba, Amazon, eBay, or AliExpress.

Sure, the results give you a rough idea, but as Zambians, we still have a lot of questions—mostly the same ones for everyone: -

  1. “How do I pay?”
  2. “How long will it take to arrive in Zambia?”
  3. “Once it’s here, where do I pick it up?”
  4. And the most important (and often most nerve-wracking): “If I don’t get my product, who is responsible? Who do I even chase?

Okay, let’s put the negatives aside for a moment. What does a successful online order actually look like? At its core, it usually follows three steps: choose your product, decide on a shipping method, and then figure out the payment. Let’s break that down.

Choosing What You Want

This step is huge. Everyone has their sources and their opinions, and honestly, everyone thinks their way is the best. Right now, most people are looking toward China. That means platforms like Alibaba, AliExpress, Made-in-China, Taobao, WeChat, 1688.com, and more. Of course, some might explore eBay, Amazon, Temu, and other international platforms. The platform may change, but the concept stays the same: find the product you want, check the price, and get ready to buy, ship and collect when it’s in ZAMBIA!.

Shipping Methods That Work for Zambia

Now, shipping—that’s where things get tricky. I’ll be honest: these are my personal opinions based on experience, so take them as guidance rather than gospel.

  1. FyCargo – In my opinion, this is the best shipping company when ordering from China. Why? The shipping options are excellent and flexible. Here’s how it works: you sign up on fycargo.com and give them your Zambian address. They’ll then provide you with their warehouse address in China, which you use when placing your order on Alibaba or your preferred Chinese platform. The process is straightforward and simple—I won’t bore you with the account setup details, trust me, it’s easy.
  2. Tigmoo – This one is better for platforms like eBay or Amazon. Again, it’s an option that works for people who need reliable shipping from the U.S. or Europe. Like I said, there are plenty of other shipping solutions out there, and everyone has an opinion—but these two have worked well for many Zambians, including myself.

The key takeaway? Ordering online is possible, but it takes some planning: you need the right product, the right platform, the right shipping solution, and a way to pay safely. That’s why the next big challenge for Zambians isn’t just finding the product—it’s finding a system that works for us.

The Reality of Online Shopping for Zambians

After you’ve chosen your dream product, the real challenges begin. And for most Zambians, these challenges usually come down to three big roadblocks: Payments, Shipping, and Trust.

1. Payments – The First Barrier Let’s be honest: almost every Zambian transacts using mobile money. Whether it’s MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, or Zamtel Kwacha, this is how we send, receive, and store money every day. You can buy talk time, pay for DSTV, even shop at Pick n Pay with MoMo.

But when it comes to international platforms like Amazon or AliExpress? It’s a dead end. You fill your cart, you’re excited, and then—boom:

- “Enter your credit card details.” or

- “Pay with PayPal.”

That’s it. No MoMo. No Airtel Money. No Zamtel Kwacha.

If you don’t have a bank card, your journey ends there. And even for those with cards, payments often get blocked or declined because Zambian banks and global platforms aren’t always in sync. For many, this is where the dream dies.

2. Shipping – The Long Wait and Hidden Stress Now, let’s say you manage to pay. That’s only round one. The next headache is shipping. Suddenly you’re asking yourself:

- “Will this thing actually arrive in Zambia?

- “How long will it take—two weeks, two months, or six?

- “When it arrives, will it come to my door, or will I have to figure out customs at the airport?”

Maybe you ordered a phone case from AliExpress. It says “Free Shipping to Zambia.” You celebrate. But three months later, you get a call that your package is at the post office in Lusaka. If you live in Chipata or Solwezi, that means even more costs and stress to actually get it. And don’t even mention tracking. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. You check online: “In transit.” For weeks. No update, no clarity. It feels more like praying than shopping.

3. Trust – The Scariest Question of All And then there’s trust. Every Zambian knows someone who’s been scammed online. It could be that friend who paid on Facebook for sneakers that never arrived. Or that cousin who ordered online only to be ghosted after payment. So the scariest question remains:

👉 “If I don’t get my product, who is responsible?” On most platforms, there’s no clear answer. The seller is in China, the courier is in another country, and the platform itself? Good luck even finding someone to talk to.

For most Zambians, once they lose money this way, it kills their confidence completely. They’ll warn others: “Don’t waste your money on that online nonsense—you’ll just lose it.” This lack of trust is the biggest barrier holding back e-commerce in Zambia.

So, What’s the Way Forward? Here’s the truth: Zambians want to shop online. The desire is there—we all love the cheap prices, the variety, the convenience. But the system was never built for us.

- Payment methods don’t match our reality—almost everyone uses MoMo, Airtel Money, or Zamtel Kwacha, yet international platforms demand Visa or Mastercard. - Shipping networks rarely reach our towns reliably, leaving people stuck with long waits or expensive middlemen. - And trust? Well, most platforms don’t protect our money if something goes wrong, which makes every online order feel like a gamble. That’s why so many of us either rely on agents, middlemen, or just give up altogether. But imagine a different way—a platform built for Zambians, by Zambians, that actually understands how we live, shop, and pay. A platform where: - Payments are simple and familiar. - Shipping is reliable, affordable, and reaches even the most remote towns.
